We had to walk down to the first of nine levels in these mines. Twenty-five flights of stairs straight down to start. At that point we were 64 meters deep, the deepest point in the entire mine is 327 meters. Even by the end of the three-hour tour we had only reached level three, and that was only for a brief moment and at the very end to get on the elevator for a 30 second rush back to the surface. The entire mine system has about 287 kilometers (178 miles) of tunnels. We did about 3 kilometers (1.9 miles), a pretty lame 1%. If there is such a thing as a bottomless pit, this may well be it.
