Seeing as it was so much hard work to get the horses down here to turn the wheels and mine the salt, they often left them living down here for 2-3 years before raising them back up to the surface.
And before you call animal cruelty, tens of thousands of people now pay hefty sums to stay down here every year. The air is healthier, pollutant-free, and full of micronutrients, and it is claimed it can improve several ailments, including respiratory problems such as asthma. In fact, it was here that they created the treatment method known as subterranotherapy. There is even a health spa center and resort down here in the salt mines.
