The entire wall is constructed out of broken Jewish headstones. As we would learn, the Jewish faith believes the spirit or soul remains at the headstone, making them of the utmost importance after death. This is why many Nazis would break headstones, use them to pave walkways and force Jews to walk across them, or turned them into other farming equipment or otherwise desecrated these sacred objects. There really was no limit to what horrors they inflicted upon innocents.
