Eventually the tracks led directly into Auschwitz II-Birkenau and the prisoners (mostly Jewish), those who had not perished during the journey, were separated into groups right there on the train platform, and with a nod of the head or gesture of the arm, would be sent to immediate death or labor. The average life expectancy of those sent to work was about three months.
