Beer Bar and Locals

Here is the small beer bar that our host took us to this afternoon.  The lady folk had gone to an Ethnographic Open-air Museum and almost immediately our host came out back to the terrace and told us he had never tried it before, but would we like to do so with him.  Great spot, 8-10 draught beers on tap and a very informative and friendly shop worker.  We sat outside and tried about four different Lithuanian beers.  Also love the bag of chips in no less than 6 different languages.
About halfway through our time there, two younger guys showed up and were curious about Jihye and I.  I can't say they were threatening or anything, but it was clear they weren't thrilled about our presence and were asking our host about us and wondering why we were all speaking English.  I spoke with the bartender on one run for new beers, and he confided that this neighborhood isn't the most open towards foreigners.  In an effort towards friendliness, I bought them a bag of chips and offered it...they refused but I insisted and put the bag on their table and said they could at least take them home.  Most interestingly, on the next run indoors for beers, I discovered that they had put the chips unopened inside, basically they refused to accept my 'peace offering.'  I joked with the bartender and got him to agree to take our side if anything did happen.  The two local guys followed us under the umbrella when a small shower started.  Was able to ask him point blank what he thought of the USA, he said it was a good country where someone could make more money than here in Lithuania.  Also got them to agree to take a single photo with us.  They simply disappeared leaving two pints of beer nearly untouched during my next run inside.  Never felt threatened per se, but it was peculiar to say the least.  Actually reminded us a great deal of Russia.  Will be curious to see if we come across more or less of this as we travel through the rest of Central and Eastern Europe.  Definitely something to pay attention to.

  1. Are those your two odd (new) friends in the last picture?
