The entire Pest side of the Danube is filled with spectacularly historic and imposing examples of architecture. Every other city we have spent some time in: Tallin, Parnu, Riga, Siauliai, Vilnius, Kaunas, Warsaw, Gdansk, Berlin, Poznan, and Krakow, were largely bombed during WWII and rebuilt afterwards. While they appear at first glance to be full of well-aged structures and buildings, they are many of them reconstruction and restoration projects. As far as I know, Budapest was only bombed a bit towards the end of the war after Hungary was forced to join the Nazi side. Many of the buildings here have a scale, grit and a certain patina that the other cities' buildings by and large do not.
