Read that people were able to climb all over the stones and had unlimited access to the ruins in the 1970's and earlier. Glad they are doing great conservation and restoration work, but still would love to approach and see it even closer.
Just an FYI, but do NOT even try touching the marble. Two women posed beside the Propylaea at the entrance for a photo with their hands on the marble column. Instantly the men who had been lazily loitering around were in full force, blowing whistles, screaming, shouting, charging, and scolding the three offenders. They went as far as to force them to show the photos on their digital camera and tried to make them delete it/them. Reminded me of the Russian immigrations officials/gestapo in Vladivostok. Sheesh…
