Awkward Meal

Stopped at what seemed to be an open street fair with plenty of food booths.  We quickly realized we didn't know the system here…once we got into the correct line, the older female server piled food on the plates of those in front of us and then despite our obvious hand motions towards what we wanted, she skipped right over us and served another two or three people behind us.  Finally the gentleman taking payments got her to serve Jihye, but he had to remind her yet again to give me something…not what I was clearly pointing at, but I was just relieved to have food.  Sat down at the long tables to eat, but Jihye quickly became self-conscious about being perhaps the only woman, and we were the only ones not using our fingers.  After Jihye couldn't bear to eat the meat anymore (she really didn't like the smell), I quickly finished up and we left our seats.  All in all the food was delicious, and it shouldn't have been such an odd experience.  However we both commented to each other afterwards that it felt a bit awkward for reasons we couldn't quite put our fingers on.
