This odd woman had walked past us earlier as we sat near the entrance to the basilica and mumbled, 'Heil Hitler' just loud enough to be audible. I couldn't even believe that was what we had heard, but it was unmistakable. We happened to pass by her on the other side of the square and I was ready with a strong retort…I hollered, 'Go to Hell' in reply to her, but to my surprise, she didn't even flinch. She just kept waddling around St. Peter's Square, getting close enough to people yet keeping an oddly aware distance and mumbling 'Heil Hitler' to everyone she came across. Seemed like other people couldn't quite make out what she was saying, although quite a few had the same puzzled/shocked/disgusted/look of disbelief on their faces after she passed by.
