Odd situation inside of this church. We had just entered and I started taking a couple photos of the center nave and headed to snap a shot of the left aisle when a gentleman clearly working as security, complete with the dangling ear-piece, approached me and asked to see the photos I had just taken. I hesitated, but relented and showed him. He said they were 'OK' and I asked him why he wanted to see them. All he said was, "Very important person is here." Well that had me hooked, obviously it was a gentleman in a gray suit that I could now see but hadn't caught his face on camera. Tried to pose Jihye in order to get a shot of him, but he slipped into the crypt before we could. Thinking not much of it, I wandered around and took a few more photos. Jihye was spending more time than myself in this particular church, so I drifted towards the back wall and sat down on an empty short wooden bench in the back corner. On the short bench to my right was a tan leather glasses case. Usually I would just ignore them, but this time I picked it up and opened it. Inside were a hefty pair of expensive metallic sunglasses and a small post-it note with three names and phone numbers. Already owning my own sunglasses, I placed them both back inside the case and put it back down onto the bench. Within ten seconds the same security guard approached me again and snatched the case, pointed to the ceiling above the main altar and said, "Cameras…you are being watched." What in the hell?? It's a dimly lit, moderately busy (with tourists and worshippers) church in the middle of Rome…why do I feel like I've walked into a real-life Godfather situation? Nothing else noteworthy happened…except that the man in the gray suit never reemerged from the crypt below.
(You can see the back of the gentleman in the gray suit in the fourth picture below, he is up towards the front of the photo right beside Jihye who is wearing a bright yellow shirt.)
