Despite Nazi control of Krakow, the Jagiellonian University intended to open its doors for study in 1939. The Nazis waited until most professors and University officials were gathered for an opening ceremonial speech at the beginning of a new term. Immediately a Nazi SS Sturmbannfuhrer took the stage, read this speech, and the building was surrounded by Nazi SS who took all manners of the academic elite away to prisons, work camps, or worse.
This is the text of that brief, but powerfully frightening for what it meant, speech.
