Constant Renovation Work

On any trip up to the top of the Acropolis the first and constant sound you will hear is the endless 'tink-tink-ing' of the marble work being done on the Parthenon and the Propylaea.  It is interesting to me that the original Parthenon was built in eight years with no machines and yet this current restoration project has been underway for decades.  Why could so much more seemingly be done with far much less for far much less in much much less time?
