The local forces would capture American weapons, and use them for their own devices. The dangers inherent in this task were astounding. Even today, as recently as a week or two ago, we read about a WWII-era bomb being unearthed in Bangkok and several metalworkers cutting into it not realizing it was still a 'live' device. The munition exploded and something like seven people were killed and more than a dozen injured. The bravery needed to go sawing into a 'live' bomb is difficult to imagine.
