I did not want to take any photos or videos of inside the museum out of respect. And while most of the photos would be a bit too shocking or horrific to share on a blog like this, I did make one video and take a single photo from the exhibit.
The video shows a disturbing report on the progress of the 'Final Solution' in Lithuania. Most shocking to me was the final line about the 'liquidation' of a 'Jewess' if she is illegally impregnated despite the sterilization of all male Jew workers.
Sadly, nearly all of the Jews were not just driven out of Lithuania and Vilnius, but they were murdered, often cruelly. Just outside of Vilnius is an area called 'Paneriai' (Ponary) where over 100,000 were executed and buried in pits...later to have other Jews dig up their decomposing corpses in order to burn them in an attempt to hide the crimes committed by Nazi Germany before the Russians reached the area. Over 70,000 of these were Jews. The stories and photos contained in the Holocaust Museum here in Vilnius left us sickened, silent, and our eyes spilling tears. The worst story was Rabbi Osovski, his hands and feet tied down to a chair, his head placed on an opened Talmud and then sawed off and displayed on the windowsill with a note which read, "We will do this to every Jew". The photos of women holding their children as a Nazi soldier takes aim inches from them, or of women stripped to nearly nothing, standing, almost serenely above the pits filled with bodies, waiting to be shot.....
