Vilnius, Lithuania was known as the 'Jerusalem of Lithuania' prior to WWII. Right up until the Catastrophe (Holocaust), Lithuania was home to 240,000 Jews, of which nearly 100,000 lived in Vilnius (45% of the capital city was Jewish!). There were over 110 synagogues and 10 yeshivas (Jewish college or seminary). A famous quote says: "If one wants to do business, one has to go to Lodz, but if one wants to gain wisdom, one goes to Vilnius."
This is the last remaining synagogue which happened to be near our first apartment here in Vilnius.
