The Last Bastion

Making our way up the hill opposite the castle tower ruins and we discover these last bastion renovations.  These were the fortifications put up to guard against the Russian attacks centuries ago.  They were built to the south and east of the city, as the wise among the locals felt this was the direction the Russians would attack from.  It does strike me as odd that a Russian army would travel great distances to Vilnius only to be thwarted in their efforts by a wall placed on a particular side of the city.  Anyhow, these are the last remaining sections of the wall, the rest was torn apart, stone by stone by the Russians and used in other construction or sold.  Also found a church with its doors closed before we headed back down into town and some much needed refreshments.
