The only surviving Hellenistic-type theater in modern Macedonia, the others all being Roman. Incredible history, as it once held Greek plays of all varieties but was later used by the Romans for gladiator fights, and even for the execution of Christians at this very spot. Because of that infamy, the locals buried this theater and it wasn't discovered again until the 1980's by accident while digging to build nearby houses. However because it was buried, it was preserved in a remarkably good condition. While the top level is lost to the inexorable march of history, this lower bowl remains and each year plays and concerts are once again performed here.

Ancient Theater of Ohrid
The only surviving Hellenistic-type theater in modern Macedonia, the others all being Roman. Incredible history, as it once held Greek plays of all varieties but was later used by the Romans for gladiator fights, and even for the execution of Christians at this very spot. Because of that infamy, the locals buried this theater and it wasn't discovered again until the 1980's by accident while digging to build nearby houses. However because it was buried, it was preserved in a remarkably good condition.
