A noted writer, translator, and teacher. Interestingly he considered himself Bulgarian and worked for independence from the Ottoman Empire for Bulgaria. In 1860 he won a poetry contest in Athens for a poem he wrote in Greek, 'O Armatolos' ('The Serdar'), was called the 'second Homer', and was even offered scholarships in Oxford and Berlin. Today he is considered an ethnic Macedonian as he was born here in Ohrid. Just another example of the messy history of this area, and the at times futility of trying to draw borders in certain parts of the world.
