Alcohol sales stop at exactly 7pm during the winter months here in Macedonia (9pm in the more lively summer season). We were puzzled to see the wine and liquor shelves covered at the supermarket as well as the beer refrigerators locked shut when we got there at about 7:30pm. After searching at several mini-markets, we met a friendly shop owner who was willing to unlock his fridge and sneak us a few beers as long as we agreed to smuggle them out in our other shopping bags. He told us the fine was 300 Euro if he was caught by the authorities. For that reason he and his shop's identity shall remain anonymous.
