Named after Baron Samuel Brukenthal, Chancellor of Transylvania 1777-1787. He was immensely wealthy and went about collecting a great deal of artwork and other significant cultural items. While not necessarily first-rate, he did gather a good number of works from lesser artists and had a collection that was noteworthy on a European level.
