Once it was clear the Romans were finally going to storm the mountain top fortress after a three year siege, the defenders made the incredible decision to die free rather than become slaves. They drew 'lots' of ten, which one man would kill before killing himself, all until a final man was left who was then supposed to kill himself. One man lacked the courage, changed his name to a Roman one, Josephus Flavius, and lived to write about the events on Masada.
