Highway of Death

Here we are waiting for the overnight bus from Sibiu to Timisoara, Romania.  While the schedule said it was going to be about a seven hour overnight trip, apparently the second driver thought it said we needed to get there in about 17 minutes.  I can honestly say I have never been so frightened on the road as on this night.  Sitting in the third or fourth row of seats while this kamikaze driver flew down the hills of Transylvania in pitch black, getting six inches away from the trucks in front of him, then suddenly veering out into oncoming traffic to pass.  I lost count of how many times I thought we would surely be hit head on, wishing I'd taken a seat further in the back so I had a better chance of surviving.  The 'highlight' was a double pass that he was trying for about 20 minutes to pull off.  Once the truck in front actually swerved into the other lane to prevent us from passing...and thank God it did.  Our obsessed driver had missed the fact that two people were walking in the other lane with no lights.  And why were they walking in the other lane?  Because two semi-trucks were smashed and rolled and destroyed in the ditch just ahead.  Never have I been so happy to reach our destination.
We decided to ride trains for the next few legs of the journey.
