Originally a celebration of Tito's birthday on May 25th, the event grew until more than a million people were involved and batons were arriving for an ever greater expanse of Yugoslavia. Beginning in 1957 it became known as Youth Baton Day and continued on seven years after his passing, until 1987. This was an entire room beside his gravesite that houses particularly important and significant batons.
