Missed the first time we passed by, apparently this is the 'exact' center of Moscow, Russia. Tradition holds that you stand backwards in the center and toss a coin over your shoulder for luck. We stood and watched for five minutes as people of all ages and nationalities did just that. Coins flying all over the place. (safety note: DO NOT stand too close as you are sure to be pelted with errantly-thrown coins!)
Peculiarly, an old woman, of a distinct character, was hovering and watching and would pounce (more like teeter awkwardly and uneasily) and seek out and pick up the dispatched coins. Often she would grab them before they stopping rolling along the stones. Equally often, and due to her clearly poor vision, she would be unable to discover the small coins glistening in the sun and settled into the cracks between the rough stones and to us in plain sight. She lugged around a quickly-filling yellow plastic bag of these coins.
Waste not, want not.
