A massive mosque was located directly across the street in front of our building. Seems to be foreigners/non-Muslims are prohibited from entering most of the mosques here. That is certainly not the case in every country, some extremely friendly caretakers have let us enter and explore freely in other countries, Kosovo was a good example. On the other hand, walking around the mosque in the Old City of Jerusalem felt conspicuously unwelcoming and they were quick to firmly guide people off of the grounds at exactly the minute viewing hours were over. And we weren't able to enter that mosque either.
Beautiful architecture though, the spindly towers and curved lines (not to mention breast shaped domes) seem gorgeously, almost seductively, feminine, and most of the mosques have been quite large and imposing, which also give them a very authoritative and powerful presence.
