So after we left the Orthodox Cathedral, I reread the section in our Transylvania guidebook. It mentioned a religious icon exhibition from the 16-19th centuries behind an unassuming door in the cathedral. We went back in, found the door, rang the bell, walked down the stairs expecting a few old cobwebbed stones, watched as the guide unchained the metal gates, and whoa!! Mind-blowing, but a full-on museum exists down here under the cathedral that seems perfectly unvisited. No wonder, it is behind a door that no sane person would ever think to enter.
The highlights include the first bible ever translated into Romanian, four century old church decor, documents signed by leaders of the Habsburg Empire and Hungarian kings as well as the leader of all Orthodox religion in the world, and artifacts that not many people have ever seen. Our guide was superb, and despite the monumental language barriers, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and I learned more about religious iconography and history in about two hours without any English than I had ever learned before. Thank you Eva, you are absolutely the best.
