The city of Mostar was divided largely into a Muslim population on the east of the river and the Croat population on the west. The only way across the river was the historic old bridge which was covered with boards in order to minimize the chance of being killed by sniper fire as one sprinted across it. The bridge became a common target for the artillery shells, and was finally destroyed and replaced later with a temporary bridge. I will add a link to a video of the final shell that destroyed the bridge that had stood since 1566. War is hell.
