All of the photos in the next three posts can be found by walking straight down the street we were staying on and all within two blocks of where we stayed. Actually, you can see our bed and breakfast in the background of the second photograph. There are really reminders of the horrors of the Balkan War in Mostar at every turn.
What was most noteworthy about these buildings was, clearly the ones that were the most shot up were the buildings that stood at the end of small lanes leading perpendicularly off of this main road in the other direction, it was obvious that perhaps Bosnian Croat soldiers were in these buildings keeping watch as Bosnian Muslim soldiers would approach up the lanes from the east and would also be attacking these strategic vantage points. This is the very definition of urban warfare.
For the most accurate portrayal of the hell that was unleashed on this small city, watch this BBC documentary filmed here during the war itself. The full video is around 44 minutes long, but watch just the first 5 minutes or so and you will have enough of an idea of the all-out nonstop violence that occurred here not that long ago. We are walking around on many of the same streets you can see in the video during our stay here.
