Remaining Chimney Stacks

The older barracks here at Auschwitz II-Birkenau were built primarily with brick.  As more and more barracks were needed, the buildings were constructed with wood.  That is why many of them were burnt and destroyed when the Nazis tried to hastily retreat from the Auschwitz labor/extermination camps.  All that remain are the chimney stacks.  These photos do nothing to give you the feeling that exists when you stare out at the endless stacks.  How many buildings housed how many prisoners that suffered how many crimes that led to how many deaths.
