The Nazis had constructed 30 buildings for the sole purpose of housing all of the belongings brought by the Jews and other prisoners. It was nicknamed 'Canada' because at that time, it was thought Canada was a fairly rich and well-to-do country. Each prisoner was allowed to bring 25 kg. of luggage and personal belongings with them to the camp. This was to prevent panic, and I suppose also an easy way to collect a lot of the nicer belongings.
As the Nazis tried to destroy evidence of the camp, they burned the buildings and only six remained after the war. Incredibly, even in those few buildings, the displays we were shown next, the belongings of the prisoners, is overwhelming. To think how much had existed, when all 30 buildings were intact, and before much had been stolen from them.
