The first leader of Auschwitz labor/extermination camp, his efforts led directly to the increase in capacity at the extermination camps. After the war, despite disguising himself and trying to hide, he was tried, found guilty, and sentenced to death. A special structure was erected directly besides Auschwitz I camp to use for the hanging of Commandant Hoss. He was killed having to stare directly at the walls and buildings of the camp he helped to build.
Worth a note, he brought his wife and family to live at Auschwitz and even after he was reassigned to Berlin, his wife and family stayed here. His wife called Auschwitz a 'paradise' and said that she never wanted to leave. The home where they lived is only steps from the walls of the camps, and shows with alarming clarity the stark divide what existed outside the walls of the camps, and the hell on earth that took place inside of the walls.
